What is Polished Concrete?

The process for polishing concrete is quite innovative. It’s also environmentally safe and economical for your budget. Your floor will obtain a polished look by grinding, cutting, and honing the concrete using industrial-grade diamonds. Impregnating hardeners are then used to provide a polished look to the floor. Polished concrete flooring is the perfect option for warehouses, industrial plants, business facilities, schools, retail locations, showrooms, government buildings, museums, and homes.

Our Concrete Polishing Process

We utilize a multi-step process to finish a concrete floor

Large debris is removed, cracks are repaired and the entire top layer of the concrete is diamond ground. This includes filling any patches and making sure the floor is clean and ready to grind.

The unfinished concrete is accessed by cutting through the floor’s surface using an industrial-grade grinder that utilizes diamond tooling.

All expansion and control joints have joint filler installed when specified as part of the project. Holes and small cracks are filled using grout when it is applicable.

Our experienced crews use finer and finer diamonds passing over the floor. Using finer grits to sand down the floor up to 5 times gives the floor a beautiful look. Concrete honing – during this step our experienced team will grind the floor down multiple times using lighter diamond grits to make sure it looks amazing. This can be up to 5 steps of grinding.

Following the polishing process we use an impregnating guard which penetrates into the concrete and protects it from the inside out.

Polished Concrete FAQs

There are a lot of additional steps involved in the concrete finishing process based upon the needs and sheen of the floor, but these five steps should give you a good feel for how the project will move forward with The Concrete Guy.

There are lots of different grit levels to polished concrete. Generally polished concrete floors range from 200 grit to 1,200 grit. The level of reflectiveness and shine increases in order from lowest to highest. We are able to provide options that will best suite your needs from rustic to modern reflectiveness.

You can also use Concrete dye

Concrete dye is most often used to tint a polished concrete slab. These dyes are not safe from the UV rays of the sun, which means they cannot be used on concrete outdoors. When using a concrete dye you should install it with a high-quality concrete sealer so that it does not fade in areas with a lot of foot or vehicle traffic.

Yes, a polished or stained concrete floor is as durable as a concrete floor that had an epoxy system as long as the concrete is strong.
